"Imagination does not become great until human beings, given the courage and the strength, use it to create."
-Dr. Maria Montessori

Our Montessori Elementary classroom is a dual-language and mixed-aged ‘learning lab’, designed to define and meet the future needs of society.  Our elementary program centers on the development of curious minds while also building knowledge-based academic competency through an in-depth study of the world and how it works.

Students explore a rich variety of subjects, working individually and collaboratively, with Montessori’s dynamic and inquiry-based curriculum. Montessori elementary schools are designed to spark imagination and engage in intellect.  The process of ‘experiential learning’  feeds students’ quest for knowledge, all while developing sound reasoning and thinking skills.

Great emphasis is also placed on moral and social development – building integrity and compassion through cultural, global and environmental discussions and projects.

The Elementary Curriculum & Cosmic Education

The Montessori Elementary Curriculum is introduced through a spiral, hands-on, and integrated approach, which includes the subjects of history, geography, biology, language, math, science, art, music, and culture.

Dr. Maria Montessori referred to the elementary program as “cosmic education” unifying the disparate subjects into a unified whole.

“We shall walk together on this path of life, for all things are part of the universe and are connected with each other to form one whole unity.”

– Maria Montessori

Cosmic Education is introduced through the “Five Great Lessons” which are an important and unique part of the Montessori elementary curriculum.

These lessons are bold, exciting, and are designed to awaken imagination and curiosity. Students are struck with the wonder of creation, thrilled with new ideas, and awed by the inventiveness and innovation that is part of the human spirit. These Five Great Lessons paint a broad picture, laying the context for the more specific study. They consist of:

The Beginning

The First Great Lesson weaves a tale of the origins of the universe and our own planet. Using impressionistic charts and experiments directly related to the basic physical properties of matter, a foundation is made for the future study of physics, chemistry, astronomy and geology.

The Timeline of Life

This timeline represents the beginnings of life on Earth from the simplest forms through the appearance of human beings. Each organism is presented as a contributor to a vast, ineffable cosmic scheme.

The Coming of Humans

Continuing the exploration of life on Earth, this timeline stresses the development of humans from the earliest beings through the use of tools.

The History of Writing

This lesson explores the development of writing from its appearance in primitive cultures to its role in modern society.

The History of Mathematics

Montessori elementary programs explore the use of mathematics as an expression of the refinement of the human mind and as a response to individual and shared needs.

The curriculum is designed to encourage a deeper understanding of the interconnected nature of seemingly disparate subjects. Its intent is to encourage interest and focus on the development of a whole individual. English is the primary language and Spanish is the secondary language of our Montessori Elementary Program. Lessons with the Montessori materials are presented primarily in English (with the exception of the Spanish language materials), and guides communicate interchangeably, between Spanish and English.  Guides are bilingual in English and Spanish, with Spanish being their native language.  Additionally, Spanish class is included in the weekly “specials” schedule, in addition to PE, Handworks, Music, and Environmental Education. Nature’s Classroom Institute (NCI), located in New Ulm, Texas, was founded in 1973 to provide students with opportunities to learn about and experience the natural environment. NCI is a residential outdoor school program that uses the natural world to provide students with learning opportunities that cannot be replicated in a classroom setting. NCI emphasizes experiential education, offers a holistic approach to learning and fosters students’ academic, social and personal growth. Students develop a sense of community, confidence in themselves as well an appreciation for others after living and learning together at Nature’s Classroom, Inc., which they carry back into the school community.

Students in the Upper Elementary Class participate in a five-day trip each year. The NCI program helps students understand the natural environment, participate in ecosystem discovery and study and collaborate as a community with their peers and teachers. The program includes group challenges to boost confidence, historical simulations, scientific exploration and many other hands-on academic lessons. A visit to NCI is an environmental education and a life-changing experience! To learn more about Nature’s Classroom Institute, visit www.discovernci.org.
