Unlocking the Potential of Young Minds: The Science of Reading

At Montessori House for Children & Elementary School, we are dedicated to transforming the way children engage with reading. Through the Science of Reading program, we’re not just teaching children to read; we’re unlocking the door to lifelong learning and understanding. This research-based approach underpins our commitment to nurturing proficient readers from ages 6 to 12.

Reading Assessments

We are committed to equipping our students with the skills they need to become proficient, independent readers. We utilize Acadience Reading as the screening tool for newly enrolled students, students in their final year of early childhood education, and first-year elementary students.

This system helps us assess the effectiveness of our instructional methods, measure reading proficiency, and helps to identify children who may have reading difficulties. This approach allows us to tailor our instruction to ensure our students’ reading skills progress.

The Foundation of Reading Mastery

The journey begins with a solid foundation in phonics and phonemic awareness. Our youngest scholars are introduced to the magic of letter-sound relationships, blending sounds, and the joy of exploring rhymes. It’s here, in these pivotal early years, that we lay the groundwork for reading success, emphasizing explicit, sequential phonics instruction and the mastery of phonics and word-reading skills.

Advancing with Fluency

As our students transition to the higher grades, the focus shifts to building fluency. Repetitive readings and tracking words per minute not only enhance reading accuracy and speed but also ignite a love for reading. This method serves as a powerful tool, motivating students to soar to new heights in their reading journey.

Broadening Horizons

Beyond second grade, while decoding remains crucial, our curriculum expands to enrich vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Through a mix of fiction and nonfiction, students explore diverse word structures and apply strategies to deepen their text understanding, fostering a well-rounded reading experience.

Tailored to Every Learner

Personalized learning is central to our approach. By leveraging small groups and differentiated instruction, we ensure every student’s reading skills flourish. This individualized method allows us to meet each child at their level, providing the support they need to excel.

Embracing All Learners

The Science of Reading shines in its ability to support diverse learning needs:

  • Struggling Readers: Systematic phonics instruction demystifies letter-sound relationships.
  • Learning Disabilities: Activities geared towards phonemic awareness aid students with dyslexia.
  • Focus Challenges: Structured lessons enhance retention for students with ADHD.
  • Gifted Students: The curriculum’s adaptability ensures gifted learners are continually challenged.
  • English Language Learners: A strong emphasis on phonics and vocabulary aids in decoding and understanding.

Fostering a Love for Reading

At Montessori House for Children & Elementary School, the Science of Reading program is more than a curriculum; it’s a pathway to nurturing proficient, confident readers. By equipping our students with foundational reading skills, we’re not only enhancing their academic journey but also instilling a lifelong love for reading.
